In specific, the diagnosis of melanoma and other skin cancers is improved beyond what is possible with the naked eye examination. As the first Canadian dermatologist to use a dermoscopy(device) almost 30 years ago, I understand the utility of this device and it has become an essential tool in my daily practice. The team at MetaOptima have raised the bar further when it comes to the dermoscopic evaluation of pigmented lesions. They have created a compact and inexpensive dermoscope that allows the general public to assess their own lesions and/or interact with a trained dermoscopist through a secure web-based portal. There are a number of features that are worthy of mention: First the optics on the device are excellent and provide a clear image of the lesion in question; second, the device is easily installed on a smartphone; third, the Dermengine App provides a straightforward and logical user interface; and fourth, lesion evaluation using their teledermatology platform has proved to be close to what would be experienced in a face to face patient encounter. I believe the DermEngine App and accompanying smartphone dermoscope are setting the standard for patient evaluation when it comes to pigmented lesions.
